Environmental toxicology expert witnesses may write reports and testify regarding toxic chemicals exposure, including PCBs, benzene, lead, asbestos, and correlated matters. In Tucker County Circuit Court, WV, Paul Wamsley filled a wrongful death suit against G.A. Brown & Son, Inc., after his mother died from inhaling dust at a construction project. Wamsley says his mother inhaled materials including lead and asbestos which led to pneumonia and her death.

Insurance expert Ty Leverty was in the news reporting that customers pay up to 31% more for insurance when insurance companies have to comply with regulations in more than one state. The University of Iowa professor of finance has also studied how tort reform laws lower insurance premiums and save consumers money, dependent upon where the consumer lives.
Leverty’s paper, “The Cost of Duplicative Regulation: Evidence From Risk Retention Groups,” was published recently in the Journal of Risk and Insurance.

In the news, United Services Automobile Association has filed a lawsuit stating they did not infringe on Mobile Deposit(R) patents issued to Mitek Systems. Mitek says the USAA branchless banking product infringes on their mobile deposit application.

The DNA Initiative is offering a 13 module training course entitled Introduction to Law 101: Legal Guide for the Forensic Expert. The course was produced by the National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology and the Law (NCSTL) at Stetson University College of Law with funding from the National Institute of Justice.

Trucking expert witnesses may provide reports regarding the Department of Transportation federal motor carrier safety regulations, trucking drug and alcohol regulations, and correlated issues. In the news this week, the US Senate passed a two-year, $109B bill to fund the nation’s highways and public transit system. Provisions include a drug and alcohol testing clearinghouse for truck drivers, truck crash-worthiness standards, and $2B a year for a national freight program. American Trucking Associations President and CEO Bill Graves encouraged the house to also approve the long term highway bill.
